6th day - Kukeldash Madrasah

KUKELDASH MADRASAH

 Hello dears !

Today we visited one of the most well-known and the largest  madrasah of Bukhara , Kukeldash Madrasah馃槍. Today始s trip was so beneficial for us .馃檭 We gained new information about this place during today始s guided tour. 馃挮 Now I始m going to share my impression and give some information about this outstanding Madrasah馃

In Bukhara, near the famous historical complex Lyab-i Hauz, the well-known architectural monument Kukeldash Madrasah is located (built in 1568 - 1569). It is the largest  madrasah in Buhkara (80×60 meters) and one of the largest ones in Central Asia. It was built during the reign of Abdullah-Khan II and was funded by Bukhara governor Kulbaba who ruled the city under several khans and managed to maintain good relations with all of them. For his close relationship with the khans the governor was given the title Kukeldash, which was one of the highest standings in the khan’s court and meant ‘a milk brother’. Later the madrasah was named after him.

Many people believe that Kukeldash Madrasah is part of Lyab-i Hauz complex, but it is wrong: archaeological excavations and research proved that the madrasah is a separate structure that bears no relation to Lyab-i Hauz.

The madrassah has over 160 cells, where lived and studied more than 320 students. It became the symbol of powerful state under leading of Abdulla-khan.It is a two-storied building with a large mosaic portal at the entrance, decorated with deep arched nishes, flanked on the corners by elegant columns of translucent green onyx. The interior decoration is the perfect example of "white interior".

Only the city’s most famous and talented masters were involved in the construction of Kukeldash Madrasah, which explains its amazing durability through several earthquakes and numerous reconstructions. Thanks to the efforts of talented craftsmen who carried out later restorations on their own initiative, the madrasah continues to be counted among the greatest historical monuments of Bukhara.

Over its history, Kukeldash madrasah performed many different roles: it served as a caravanserai and defensive fortress, and even the place of execution. Today in one section of the madrasah there is a museum dedicated to writers Sadriddin Ayni and Jalol Ikromi. The other part is the art-restaurant where you can taste the delicious Uzbek cuisine.

In Kukeldash madrasah, a well-known Uzbek and Tajik writer, scholar and public figure - Sadriddin Aini, once studied. Most of his works have become known around the world, and were also translated into many languages. Creativity of the writer was highly appreciated by such outstanding poets as Samuil Marshak and Ivan Dzyuba.

As part of the “Historical Center of Bukhara”, in 1993 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Currently, it is the object of tourist services and shows, where the memorial museum of Sadriddin Aini and Jalol Ikrami is located.

We spent time enjoyable and took photos with coursemates, as well as our teacher was with us馃グ
