8th day - Nodir Devonbegi Madrasah

Nodir Devonbegi Madrasah

Hello my dear and near ones! Iʼm again with you . Today we visited Nodir Devonbegi Madrasah that is considered one of the most well-known architectural monuments of Buhkara. Now Iʼm going to express my impression and share the experience of todayʼs trip with you . 🤓 Letʼs start todayʼs blog with giving information about this madrasah .

Nodir Devonbegi Madrasah is located in the Old Part of Bukhara,  eastern part of Lyabi Khauz Square, opposite the khanaka Nodir Devonbegi, thus forming a kosh with a khanaka.

The madrasah was built in 1622-1623 by the vizier of Imamkuli-khan,Vizier Nadir served at a court yard of one the strongest and powerful representatives of Ashtarkhanid dynasty Imamkuli-khan, who ruled in Bukhara in 1611-1642.

Initially, Nadir Divan-begi ordered to build khanaka (a place for Sufis to reflect and rest), later caravansari was added. However, at the opening ceremony, Imamkuli-khan said that caravansari was built in the glory of the Allah, therefore the vizier had to reconstruct it into the madrasah. And it was a converted to spiritual school of this area.

The alteration of the madrasah from the karvan-shed is indicated by the layout of the building: there is no lecture hall typical of the madrassah, and there are only hujras around the courtyard. In Central Asian architecture, as a rule, instead of the main entrance, a lattice window is placed on the portal axis, and the portal diverges into different wings of the building. However, in the Nodir Begi Madrasah, a narrow entrance leads directly to the courtyard.

( You can see these kind of items  in inner part of thus Madrasah )

The Nadir Divan-begi madrasah is decorated in the style typical for all Muslim monuments of Central Asia. At the same time, the images of birds, animals and a human being - sun were also used in decoration, and it was uncharacteristic for Islamic monuments. The Nadir Divan-begi Madrasah was built on the model of Sherdor in Samarkand but famous lions at the portal were replaced with mythical birds of happiness.

In 1993, the madrasah, along with other monuments of the historical center of Bukhara, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

At the end of my todayʼs blog I want to share a photo with my dears !
