ULUGBEK   MADRASAH

Hello my dear and near ones !!!

Todayʼs blog is about one of the most well-known architectural monuments of Bukhara , Ulugbek Madrasah . I gained some new information about this museum that I havenʼt ever heard , during this trip. Now I am going to share some of them with you🤓

History Of Ulugbek Madrasah

Founded in 1417, Ulugbek Madrasah was built by Ulugbek (1393-1449) and the construction was finished in 1420. by Ismail Isfagani and Najmeddin Bukhari, the best architects of the time.Mirzo Ulugbek was the grandson of Amir Timur and the governor of Samarkand. Ulugbek  was not only a benign ruler; he was also a well renowned astronomer, scientist with high intellectual. During the Timurid era, it was an institution of learning during the Timurid period, receiving great scholars, both religious and secular.

The first restoration of this madrasah was made in between 1533 and 1539 by the order of Ubaidullah Khan. In 1586, the madrasah was again restored and several inscriptions were kept as the archive document about this restoration. During the reign of Bukhara Khalifat, Ulugbek Madrasah was redecorated at the end of 19th century.

The entrance forks a cross corridor. In one end of a corridor there was a darskhona (the room for occupations), in another - the mosque. On the second floor - library. The facade represents a two-story arcade and has two wings. On both sides of it close towers-guldasta. Also the internal structure of the yard framed with two-storied galleries of cells where there lived pupils is accurate. Walls and arches are decorated very modestly, but tiles gleam where you expect them to see. The madrasah is decorated with an ornament of astral character in what, undoubtedly, Ulugbek's outlook affected as astronomer. Quiet monastic life proceeded in prayers - in the mosque, lectures - in the darskhena, conversations - in shady galleries.

On a sample of this madrasah began to build madrasah in Central Asia.

The gate of the madrasah has a carved inscription taken from the Koran:

‘The pursuit of knowledge is the responsibility of every Muslim man and woman’. This citation can be considered to have been Ulugbek’s motto. There was also another inscription:‘May the door of God’s blessings be every day open to the people who are aware of book wisdom’.

Ulugbek was famous for his astronomical researches throughout the world. That is why astral designs in the decoration of the madrasah predominate. Some decorative elements differ in the ways they were made, which is evidence of the fact that the madrasah has been restored several times.

Ulugbek Madrasah has the capability for the seats for 80 students and the subjects are Astronomy, Mathematics, Arabic and religious subjects. Most of the graduates from this madrasah became eminent scholars, poets and calligraphers.

The madrasah is one of most outstanding Bukhara architectural monuments. Thousands of lovers of Central Asian culture visit it every year. Today the madrasah houses Bukhara Restoration History Museum.

Being a part of the historical centre of the ancient city, the madrasah has become the province of all humankind having joined the UNESCO World Heritage List.
